Iran says US broke interim war-ending deal with southern coast strikes

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi left for Baghdad on Sunday for talks with senior Iraqi officials, with arrangements for funeral ceremonies for slain Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei in Iraq’s Shiite holy sites among the issues on the agenda.

Iranian state-linked media said Araghchi would discuss bilateral relations as well as regional and international developments during his official visit.

The report said he would also coordinate with Iraqi authorities over funeral arrangements for Khamenei in the holy shrines, a sign of Tehran’s effort to give the burial ceremonies a regional Shiite dimension beyond Iran’s own cities.

The visit comes as Iran is preparing days of funeral events for Khamenei after his killing during the war, while Tehran also remains locked in disputes with the United States over the ceasefire, the Strait of Hormuz and the future of regional fronts.

The Israeli military said Sunday it killed Hezbollah militants armed with rocket-propelled grenades and struck a rocket launcher in the Nabatieh area of southern Lebanon.

The military said it attacked the structure from which the militants were operating and dismantled a rocket launcher that it said posed a threat to Israeli soldiers.

The strike comes as southern Lebanon remains one of the unresolved fronts in the wider confrontation involving Israel, Hezbollah and Iran, despite ongoing efforts to stabilize the border.

Javad Khiabani, an Iranian sports broadcaster, appeared on state television urging Algeria in Arabic to beat Austria, framing it as Muslim brotherhood to help Iran qualify.

"Today you are not playing only for Algeria. You are playing only for the Algerian people today. This will give Muslim peoples a chance to qualify and prove that two Muslim nations," Khiabani said. "We believe Algeria will play for victory, and we are certain, as always, that we are waiting for that victory. For the sake of brotherhood and honor between our peoples, for the dignity and respect between two nations."

The naval command of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said US “blind strikes” on Sirik do not resolve what it described as Iran’s control over the Strait of Hormuz.

"America's blind strikes on Sirik will not undermine our control over the Strait. But our strikes against violators serve as a reminder to other vessels of the proper route for safe passage," it posted on X. "As for US bases in the region, that is a separate matter. They will experience hell in the days ahead."

Heavy deployment of Iraqi special forces, including Humvees and tanks, has been reported inside Baghdad’s fortified Green Zone, which has been closed, according to Washington Post Baghdad Bureau reporter Mustafa Salim.

Salim said reports are emerging of arrests targeting senior government officials on corruption-related charges.
