UK spy chief says Iran turning to ‘harder targets’ including military sites
Iran has stepped up efforts to target more sensitive sites in Britain, including military facilities, the head of the UK’s domestic intelligence service MI5 said on Tuesday.
“There has been a major shift this year in Iranian ambitions to come at harder targets, like military sites,” MI5 Director General Ken McCallum said in his annual speech on threats facing Britain.
McCallum said the suspected plot involving RAF Fairford, a British air base used by US bombers during strikes on Iran, was “not unique,” adding that there had been other examples in Britain and elsewhere.
He declined to discuss the Fairford case in detail because of an ongoing investigation.
British Prime Minister Andy Burnham said on Monday that Tehran was “highly likely” to have been behind the suspected plot at the base. Iranian authorities have denied involvement in hostile operations in Britain.
McCallum said threats from foreign states had quadrupled over the past decade, forcing MI5 to devote more resources to the issue than during the Cold War.
